Weather-Appropriate Clothing

Dressing in layers is essential when traveling in Iceland, especially with kids. This section covers what to pack for Iceland with kids to stay warm, dry, and comfortable in all seasons, from base layers to waterproof outerwear.

Basics & Layering

Layering is key to staying comfortable in Iceland. Start with high-quality base layers that wick moisture and regulate temperature.

Base Layers

  • Midweight or Lightweight Thermal Tops and Bottoms: Synthetic fabrics or merino wool weigh less than 0.5 pounds each and provide warmth without bulk.
  • Long-Sleeve Shirts: Wear over thermals on cold days or solo on milder days.

Insulating Layers

  • Fleece Jacket or Sweater: Lightweight warmth; works under a shell jacket or alone on cool days.
  • Down or Synthetic Insulating Jacket: Packs down small, keeps you warm in freezing temperatures. Essential for winter, glacier hikes, and evenings outdoors.

Outer Layers

  • Waterproof and Windproof Jacket: A hooded, breathable jacket is non-negotiable. Extra spending here pays off—especially at waterfalls like Seljalandsfoss or during windy days.
  • Waterproof Pants: Lightweight and breathable, essential for wet hikes and outdoor excursions.

Having fully waterproof outerwear in Iceland makes it a lot more comfortable visiting places like Seljalandsfoss.

Additional Clothing Items

  • Comfortable Hiking Pants or Leggings: Look for rip-stop, active wear that allows freedom of movement. Consider something waterproof as well.
  • Warm Accessories: Hats, scarves, and gloves (both wool and waterproof) are important year-round.
  • Swimwear: Iceland’s geothermal pools and hot springs (Blue Lagoon, Secret Lagoon, Reykjadalur) make swimwear essential. Bring a towel if visiting natural springs outside major tourist spots, as there may not be facilities.

Footwear

  • Waterproof Hiking Boots: Sturdy, comfortable, supportive, and with good tread for wet or rugged terrain.
  • Casual Shoes or Sneakers: Useful for Reykjavik or towns. If packing light, hiking boots may suffice. On our September trip, we only brought hiking boots and found them sufficient for all our activities.
  • Ice Traction Cleats or Crampons: Recommended for winter travel or icy conditions; required and included on glacier tours.

Travel Essentials

A smooth trip starts with the right travel documents, electronics, and personal items. This section details everything families need to bring to ensure peace of mind, connectivity, and comfort during your Iceland adventure.

Travel Documents and Copies

  • Passport: Valid for at least six months beyond your return date.
  • Travel Insurance Information: Cover emergencies, cancellations, and optional extreme activities like glacier hiking.

We use the site Squaremouth, which allows us to compare multiple plans side by side to find exactly the coverage we need in our budget.

  • Backup Copies: Digital and paper copies of passport, insurance, and itinerary. Always print or take pictures of all travel documents, including passport, ID, visas, travel insurance, and any tour or activity confirmations.

Electronics

  • Phone with International Roaming / SIM Card / eSIM: Check carriers for international plans; alternatives like Holafly or Airalo work well.

  • Camera or Smartphone: Capture Iceland’s landscapes with a digital camera or smartphone. Consider a drone, but make sure to only fly in permitted locations. When bringing a drone, beware that wind conditions may not always allow flight; we actually crashed a drone here.
  • Portable Charger / Power Bank: Essential for long days outdoors or long travel days in the car.
  • Travel Adapter: Iceland uses Type C and F plugs; consider an extension cord if needed.
Make sure to bring sunglasses, warm hats, and sturdy shoes, so you’re prepared for any adventure in Iceland.

Personal Items

  • Toiletries: Travel-sized bottles of shampoo, conditioner, soap, and makeup. Normally, we would purchase these things in our destination when traveling light, but these items in Iceland are much more expensive than back home, so bring what you can.
  • Moisturizer & Lip Balm: Protects against Iceland’s dry air.
  • Sunglasses: Important for glare off glaciers and water surfaces.
