If you plan to camp in the desert, it’s highly recommended to hire a local guide. Desert navigation can be tricky, and cell service is often nonexistent, so having an experienced guide ensures you won’t get stuck and can safely return from remote areas. Most travelers flying into Oman will arrive at Muscat International Airport, where a variety of car rental options are available right inside the terminal. Even if a company doesn’t have an in-terminal location, they usually offer a convenient meet-and-greet service, driving you a short distance to their office.
If you’re arriving in Salalah, Salalah International Airport also offers in-terminal rental options. Keep in mind that renting from Salalah can be slightly more expensive—typically around $50 more per week compared to Muscat.
Choosing a reliable rental company is key to a smooth self-drive experience in Oman. Instead of focusing on specific brands, we recommend using a third-party comparison site like Discover Cars. This allows you to filter by vehicle type, transmission, number of seats, and price range, helping you find the best deal. In our experience, prices on Discover Cars were often lower than booking directly with the rental company.

Dollar Car
We chose Dollar Car for our trip, and it was an excellent experience. With recent fleet upgrades, they offer a wide range of newer vehicles—ours had only a few thousand miles! Dollar Car is conveniently located inside Muscat International Airport, with easy pickup and drop-off in the airport parking garage. The staff were incredibly helpful, providing advice on driving routes and touring Oman. Dollar Car also operates at Salalah International Airport, often as the most affordable option.
Green Motion
While we haven’t personally used Green Motion, it has strong reviews and competitive pricing. On Discover Cars, it holds an 8.7/10 rating and offers a variety of cars and vans. Green Motion does not have a terminal location in Muscat but provides a meet-and-greet service at the airport.
Europcar
Europcar is another reliable choice, with excellent customer service, newer vehicles, and a slightly higher 9.2/10 rating on Discover Cars. Prices are comparable to Green Motion and Dollar Car. Europcar is available in both Muscat and Salalah airports.

During peak tourist seasons, such as the cooler winter months, prices can rise by 20%–30%. Booking in advance is highly recommended to secure the best rates and availability.

Gas Prices
Gas prices in Oman can fluctuate, but as of April 2025, fuel costs around $0.62 per liter (approximately $2.35 per gallon)—making it very affordable for road trips. Filling up your rental car won’t break the budget, even on long drives across the country.
Parking
Parking in Oman is generally straightforward, but always check local signs to see if the zone is free or paid. During our travels, most parking areas, including public lots and near popular attractions, appeared free. That said, it’s wise to stay alert and research parking rules in advance, as regulations can change.
Tolls
Oman currently does not have a widespread toll system on its highways. During our two-week road trip across northern Oman, we didn’t encounter a single toll road. However, it’s always smart to stay informed in case new tolls are introduced, especially if you plan long-distance drives.
With a rental car, you’ll have the freedom to explore off-the-beaten-path destinations, such as the stunning Wadi Bani Khalid, without worrying about tolls or high fuel costs.
Insurance Options for Your Rental
When renting a car in Oman, understanding rental car insurance is essential for protecting yourself financially. While traffic incidents are rare (we didn’t see any accidents during our two-week road trip), unpredictable events, like a camel wandering onto the road, can happen. Most car rental companies in Oman offer several types of insurance. Here’s a breakdown:
1. Collision Damage Waiver (CDW)
CDW covers damage to the rental vehicle in case of an accident. A deductible usually applies, but some companies offer a “Super CDW” to reduce your financial responsibility.
2. Liability Insurance
Liability insurance protects against damages to other vehicles or property. Most rentals include this, but it’s always wise to double-check your agreement.
3. Personal Accident Insurance (PAI)
PAI covers you and your passengers in the event of an accident. This is especially valuable when traveling with family or friends, as medical expenses can accumulate quickly.

Some travel credit cards include rental car insurance. Check the fine print before relying on this, as coverage often comes with conditions. For example, our Chase Sapphire Preferred Card provides collision coverage only if we:
- Pay for the rental entirely with the card
- Decline all CDW or other rental insurance options
- Rent vehicles under certain MSRP limits ($125,000 in our case)
- Are aware of country restrictions
It’s essential to read your rental agreement thoroughly and clarify any uncertainties with your rental company or credit card provider. Doing so ensures your self-drive adventure in Oman is safe, enjoyable, and stress-free.
Do You Really Need a 4×4 in Oman?
While many of Oman’s roads are smooth and easily navigable with a standard 2WD rental car, certain destinations require a 4×4 vehicle. For example, exploring Wahiba Sands or navigating the rugged terrain of Jebel Akhdar is nearly impossible without a capable 4×4.
It’s important to plan your itinerary before deciding on a 4×4, as these vehicles come with a higher price tag.
When we booked our rental, a standard 2WD cost around $200 per week, while the cheapest 4×4 was about $400 per week.
Driving through Oman’s stunning landscapes, especially the Hajar Mountains, is more comfortable with a 4×4, but we had no issues driving a 2WD during our two-week road trip.
A common misconception is that you need a 4×4 to reach Jebel Shams, including the Balcony Walk trailhead. This is not true—you can safely drive a 2WD up to Jebel Shams if you proceed slowly and carefully. However, avoid attempting this route in rainy conditions, as the road can become slippery, and authorities may restrict access.
Our rental car agency confirmed that 2WD vehicles are restricted only in certain areas, such as:
- Jebel Akhdar (mountain terrain)
- Desert routes (especially sand dunes)
- Jebel Shams (only when it’s raining)
Even with a 4×4, it’s not advisable to drive alone in the desert. Hiring a local guide or traveling with another vehicle is strongly recommended for safety.

For example, U.S. citizens can obtain an IDP at any AAA office for around $20. Foreign visitors can drive for tourism or transit purposes for up to three months on an IDP.
- Residents: Expats holding an Omani residency visa must obtain a local Omani driver’s license to drive legally.
Driving Orientation
- Vehicles drive on the right-hand side, and overtaking is done on the left.
Speed Limits
- Urban Areas: 40–80 km/h
- Rural Roads: 90 km/h
- Highways: 120 km/h
Speed limits are strictly enforced via fixed and mobile cameras.
Seatbelts and Child Safety
- Seatbelts are mandatory for all passengers.
- Children under 10 must ride in the rear seat with proper restraints.
- Infants (under 9 kg / 20 lb): Rear-facing child safety seat with seatbelt.
- Toddlers (9–18 kg / 20–40 lb): Forward-facing seat with tether strap and seatbelt.
- Children over 18 kg / 40 lb: Booster seat until the seatbelt fits properly.
Traffic Signals and Signs
- Traffic laws are enforced strictly. Running a red light may result in detention and confiscation of your driver’s license and vehicle registration until legal proceedings are concluded.
- Most road signs are in Arabic and English, though place name spellings may vary.
Overtaking Rules
- Overtake on the left only.
- Overtaking on the right is prohibited unless the front driver signals a lane change.
Use of Mobile Phones
- Using mobile phones while driving is strictly prohibited, including for GPS navigation.
- Violations can incur a 300 OMR fine, up to 10 days in jail, and two black points on your driving record.

- Parking in disabled spots: 50 OMR
- Driving slowly, causing traffic jams: 35–50 OMR
- Overtaking on the shoulder: 50 OMR
- Reckless driving: Up to 500 OMR and 3 months imprisonment
- Exceeding speed limits: Up to 50 OMR + black points
