During March, the average temperature ranges from 10°C to 15°C (50°F to 59°F). While it might still be a bit chilly, the landscapes start to bloom, and you can enjoy a peaceful atmosphere in most tourist areas. The UNESCO World Heritage site of Gjirokastër, known for its well-preserved Ottoman architecture, is particularly charming during this season with fewer crowds.
April
April brings warmer days, with temperatures reaching 18°C to 22°C (64°F to 72°F). December is often mild in coastal areas, with temperatures between 2°C and 13°C (36°F to 55°F), but can drop to as low as-5°C (23°F) inland and in the mountains. The cheapest months to visit Albania would be the winter months, followed by spring and autumn, with the most expensive being the summer months. This is because summer months are peak tourism months, where visitors from all over the world come to vacation, especially by the coast.
However, with that said, you can still travel on a budget no matter the time of year, it just may require a bit of advanced planning and negotiation.
Can you visit Albania on a budget?
Of course! Albania is one of the most affordable countries in Europe, and in our personal travel experience, the second cheapest of the Balkan countries (only beaten out by Bosnia) – and yes, we’ve traveled to every Balkan country!
We spent 14 days in Albania with daily average costs for our family of 4 being under USD $100 daily, including our rental car. We rented our car outside of Albania; however, we’ve found affordable car rental at Tirana airport for as low as € 13 daily. Check Discover Cars!
We rented 1–2-bedroom apartments on Airbnb or booking.com for USD $20 – 30 per night, complete with kitchen, washing machines, and all necessities.
And for food, we usually shopped at local markets and cooked our own meals, however, eating out could cost as low as USD $3 per meal, depending on where you go and what you order.
We didn’t pay for any guided tours, and we found most entry fees to be reasonably priced.
How many days should I spend in Albania?
This is going to depend on what you want to see and do, however, if you want to see all the major historical and natural sites, we recommend a 10–14-day trip. For only a 7-day trip, we would recommend staying in the area of Tirana and taking trips to Kruje, Berat, Apollonia, Gjirokastër, and Durres.
