Why Visit Costa Rica With Your Family

Costa Rica is one of the most family-friendly travel destinations in the world, offering a perfect mix of adventure, wildlife, and relaxation. From lush rainforests and active volcanoes to pristine beaches and wildlife-rich national parks, there’s something for every age and interest. Families can hike through cloud forests, go ziplining over the treetops, watch monkeys swing through the trees, or float down crystal-clear rivers—while kids as young as toddlers can enjoy many of these experiences safely.

What makes Costa Rica truly special for families is the pura vida lifestyle. Life moves at a slower pace, locals are warm and welcoming, and the focus is on enjoying nature and spending quality time together. Even with young children, it’s easy to experience the country’s incredible biodiversity, fascinating culture, and delicious local cuisine.

Before your trip, it helps to know what to expect: tropical weather, occasional rains (especially in the lush rainforest regions), and some costs that are higher than in other parts of Central America. By preparing ahead, families can maximize fun, minimize stress, and create unforgettable memories.

Planning & Preparation

A smooth Costa Rica family trip starts with planning. From booking flights to organizing your itinerary and insurance, these tips will help you avoid common pitfalls and set your family up for a stress-free adventure.

  1. Book flights early – a great tip for finding affordable flights.
  2. Travel during shoulder seasons (May, September) for fewer crowds and lower prices.
  3. Check visa requirements—most nationalities don’t need a visa for short stays, but it’s always important to check, and regulations can always change.
  4. Purchase travel insurance covering medical emergencies, evacuation, and adventure activities. It’s a must! Compare plans side by side on Squaremouth.com.
  5. Plan outdoor activities in the mornings to avoid crowds and for the best weather in the rainy season.
  6. Make an itinerary, but leave some flexibility; kids need downtime, and the weather may not be on your side, especially during the rainy season.
  7. Research local holidays—some attractions may close or be crowded.
  8. Download offline maps in case of poor cell coverage in remote areas. Google Maps offers map downloads.
  9. Learn a few basic Spanish phrases—locals really appreciate it. Hello, please, thank you, and goodbye go a long way!
  10. Keep digital copies of passports, tickets, and important documents, or photocopy them before your trip in case of loss or theft.

Money & Budgeting

Costa Rica can be more expensive than other parts of Central America, so it’s smart to plan your money ahead. These tips cover cash, credit cards, local meals, and budgeting for excursions to help you save without missing out.

  1. Bring Costa Rican colones for small vendors, tips, and roadside stops. While cards are widely accepted, we did find local vendors that were cash only.
  2. Order currency from your home bank before travel to avoid airport fees. Airport and local currency offices typically charge higher fees.
  3. Bring small bills—easier for local purchases and tips. Some local vendors may not have change for large bills.
  4. Carry 2–3 credit cards and make sure they have no foreign transaction fees.
  5. Alert your bank before travel to prevent holds or fraud alerts. Call your credit card company ahead to prevent holds on your cards.
  6. Budget for high-cost excursions—waterfalls, hot springs, and guided tours are often $30–$100 per person. Activities aren’t cheap here; even basic entry to many waterfalls and hiking areas can be almost $20 per person.
  7. Use local sodas for meals—affordable and authentic. Try the ones outside main tourist hubs for a more authentic experience and lower prices.
  8. Cook meals in your accommodation—shop at local grocery stores and cook meals at your accommodation to save money.
  9. Plan one “special meal out” per day, typically lunch. Our best budget tip – plan on cooking breakfast and dinner in your accommodation and eating out for lunch. This allows you to try local foods while sticking to a budget.
  10. Travel outside major tourist hubs for cheaper dining and local flavor. Avoid restaurants at major tourist attractions if you can.

Packing & Gear

Packing for a family trip to Costa Rica requires a balance of adventure-ready gear and practical essentials. From rain protection to wildlife-watching tools, these tips make sure you have everything you need for comfort, safety, and fun.

  1. Bring good hiking shoes—waterproof with a good grip. Skip the sneakers and wear waterproof and sturdy shoes – you’ll need them!
  2. Pack lightweight rain gear and ponchos. Especially important in the rainy season, but it can rain anytime of the year, so it’s best to be prepared.
  3. Use dry bags for electronics and valuables on hikes or river trips. You never know when it will downpour, so being prepared is key, especially when carrying electronics or cameras.
  4. Bring bug spray with DEET for rainforest hikes. Bring more than you think you need.
  5. Pack sunscreen and a hat—the sun is strong even on cloudy days.
  6. Bring binoculars for wildlife spotting. Kids will love this idea, and it makes long rainforest hikes much more fun and interactive for them.
  7. Bring a small first-aid kit. Bandages, medications, motion sickness remedies, antihistamine and anti-itch are important. Make sure to pack children’s versions as well.
  8. Bring a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated and save money. We love these insulated ones – they really keep water cold all day!
  9. Pack snacks for kids during drives or long excursions, and don’t forget snack containers.
  10. Bring lightweight child carriers for young kids on trails. We don’t recommend a stroller here – it won’t get much use.

Transportation

Getting around Costa Rica can be part of the adventure—or a source of stress if unprepared. These tips cover renting cars, driving safely, using public transport, and planning routes to make travel with kids easier.

  1. Rent a car for flexibility— it’s cheaper than private transfers for families and allows you to travel at your own pace.
  2. Drive carefully, especially in San José—traffic can be hectic, and drivers aren’t the safest. Additionally, be cautious on unpaved roads and watch out for large rocks or other hazards like animals.
  3. Consider public buses for short distances—cheaper and a fun local experience in many larger cities.
  4. Plan routes geographically to reduce fuel and travel time. Plan a logical loop and avoid backtracking to save on fuel and time.
  5. Check parking availability at national parks and attractions. Parking can fill up fast at many popular sites like Manuel Antonio National Park, so always research a backup.

Accommodation

Choosing the right place to stay can save time, money, and stress. These tips help you pick family-friendly lodgings, whether it’s apartments, guesthouses, or small hotels, so you can relax after a day of adventure.

  1. Stay in apartments or guesthouses with kitchen access. Check Airbnb, Booking.com, and Expedia to find the best options.
  2. Book early for peak season; affordable or popular hotels often fill fast.
  3. Look for family-friendly amenities—washing machines, kitchen amenities or included breakfast, pools, or playgrounds. For resorts, check for family-friendly rooms, kids’ clubs, and babysitting.
  4. Check for free breakfast or included perks like activity packages that could save money.
  5. Stay near your main activities to reduce daily driving with kids, or stay farther out to save more money.

Activities & Nature

Costa Rica is packed with natural wonders and family-friendly activities. These tips will help you plan excursions, spot wildlife, and navigate national parks safely while maximizing fun for everyone.

  1. Expect some excursions to be pricey—plan your budget accordingly. The bulk of our travel costs was for activities and entry fees. Even waterfalls and hiking areas will have entry fees.
  2. Hire guides at national parks (Manual Antonio, Monteverde, Mistico) for better wildlife spotting. You can book online or at the entrance with locals.
  3. Self-guided tours can save money if your family is comfortable navigating trails or wants to go at your own pace.
  4. Bring binoculars or cameras for birdwatching and wildlife spotting. Kids will love this, and it makes it a lot easier to spot the animals.
  5. Plan outdoor activities in the mornings; afternoon rains are usually brief but can be heavy. Planning outdoor activities early morning or late afternoon also limits heat and sun exposure – particularly important when traveling with kids.
  6. Respect wildlife and nature rules—no feeding or touching animals, and be sure to stay on trails. No littering!
  7. Use dry bags and waterproof cases during rafting, tubing, or waterfall visits. A GoPro with waterproof housing and a floating stick works great for rafting and tubing adventures.
  8. Take advantage of free attractions—beaches, volcano viewpoints, and public parks.

  1. Try local fruits and cuisine—Costa Rica has amazing tropical produce and a wide variety of delicious local dishes. Consider a local food tour or even a coffee and chocolate tour for deeper insight and fun tastings – a hit with kids.
  2. Don’t miss the sodas—small family-run restaurants often have the best food at great prices. It’s a real taste of authentic Costa Rican cuisine.
