- Carry 2–3 credit cards and make sure they have no foreign transaction fees.
- Alert your bank before travel to prevent holds or fraud alerts. Call your credit card company ahead to prevent holds on your cards.
- Budget for high-cost excursions—waterfalls, hot springs, and guided tours are often $30–$100 per person. Activities aren’t cheap here; even basic entry to many waterfalls and hiking areas can be almost $20 per person.
- Use local sodas for meals—affordable and authentic. Try the ones outside main tourist hubs for a more authentic experience and lower prices.
- Cook meals in your accommodation—shop at local grocery stores and cook meals at your accommodation to save money.

- Bring a small first-aid kit. Bandages, medications, motion sickness remedies, antihistamine and anti-itch are important. Make sure to pack children’s versions as well.
- Bring a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated and save money. We love these insulated ones – they really keep water cold all day!
- Pack snacks for kids during drives or long excursions, and don’t forget snack containers.
- Bring lightweight child carriers for young kids on trails. We don’t recommend a stroller here – it won’t get much use.

- Plan outdoor activities in the mornings; afternoon rains are usually brief but can be heavy. Planning outdoor activities early morning or late afternoon also limits heat and sun exposure – particularly important when traveling with kids.
