Baldi features 25 natural thermal pools fed by Arenal Volcano, with a wide range of temperatures so everyone can find a pool that’s comfortable—even little ones. The resort is very family-friendly and offers something for every age group.

El Choyin is the free option; however, you will pay a small fee for roadside parking. Tabacón is comparable to Baldi, however, more adult-focused and best for couples or families with older children. After a relaxing first day, it’s time to start exploring La Fortuna’s natural landscapes. Begin your morning with a family-friendly hike near Arenal Volcano, one of the most iconic landmarks in Costa Rica.

There are several well-maintained trail systems in and around Arenal Volcano National Park that are suitable for families, with relatively easy paths, lava fields, and scenic viewpoints. This is a great opportunity for kids to learn about volcanic history, spot wildlife like birds and monkeys, and experience the rainforest up close without an overly strenuous hike.
The Arenal Volcano National Park entrance is located HERE, and the entry cost is $15 USD per adult and $5 per child (ages 2-12), paid with CARD ONLY.

Note that the easiest trail for littles is Las Coladas – a flat, mostly shaded path that’s only about 2 km each way. At the end, you’ll see the 1992 lava flow trail and 2 stunning viewpoints of Arenal Volcano
Late Morning / Early Afternoon:
La Fortuna Waterfall
After your volcano hike, head to La Fortuna Waterfall, one of the most famous attractions in the region. A short but steep walk down many stairs leads to a stunning 75-meter waterfall that cascades into a natural pool below.
Families can choose how much time to spend here — some enjoy a quick visit for photos, while others plan time to swim and relax near the water. Older kids usually love swimming, while parents can enjoy the scenery and take a break.
Note that it isn’t always possible to swim, especially during rainy season, as the water levels and currents can fluctuate. On our visit, no swimming was allowed.

Tip: The stairs can be challenging for very young kids, so take it slow and bring water.
The waterfall is situated about a 10-minute drive from downtown La Fortuna, with a dedicated parking lot available free of charge. The road to the parking lot is paved, so a 4×4 vehicle is not necessary.
Once you pass the entrance and purchase your tickets ($18 for adults and $5 for children aged 8 and up), you’ll walk through several shops and cafes before arriving at an observation deck that offers a bird’s eye view of the waterfall. This is where we spotted the monkeys!
To the left of the observation deck is a set of 500 stairs leading to the waterfall. There are benches and resting spots along the way, and it’s important to wear shoes with a good grip, especially during the rainy season when the stairs can become slippery.
Afternoon:
Chocolate or Coffee Tour
After a morning of hiking and swimming, slow things down with a chocolate or coffee tour, one of the most engaging cultural experiences for families in La Fortuna.
Chocolate tours are especially popular with kids, offering hands-on demonstrations of how cacao is grown and turned into chocolate, along with plenty of tastings. Coffee tours are equally educational and often adapted for families, with kid-friendly explanations and opportunities to explore farms and gardens.

Mistico Hanging Bridges Guided Tour
Start your final day in La Fortuna with a guided tour of Mistico Hanging Bridges, one of the best places in the area for families to experience the rainforest and spot wildlife.
This tour typically lasts 2–3 hours and follows well-maintained trails and sturdy hanging bridges that wind through the forest canopy. A guided tour is highly recommended for families, as naturalist guides help spot animals like monkeys, sloths, birds, and reptiles that are easy to miss on your own.

The park is located about 20 minutes east of downtown La Fortuna and has a large, free parking lot for guests. You can buy tickets ahead of time or at the park. They accept cash or card payments.
Book tickets online ahead of time during peak season as they do only allow so many people in for each time slot. Their website will tell you how many spots are available for each slotted time.
You can book guided tours around the park (recommended for better wildlife viewing and insight) or buy a self-guided ticket (what we did). They also offer combo tickets with other attractions such as horseback rides, night walks, and river boat trips.
Guided tours are $44 per adult, $17 for children aged 5-10, and $34 for ages 11-18.
A self-guided ticket is $32 per adult, $12 for children aged 5-10, and $21 for those aged 11-18.
The trail around the park is about 3.2 km long and follows a one-way loop. The total time needed is about 2-3 hours.
Afternoon:
Choose One Final Family Activity
After your morning at Mistico, you have several great options to round out your last day in La Fortuna. Choose based on your kids’ ages, energy levels, and interests:
Option 1: Peñas Blancas Wildlife Safari Float
A calm river float that’s perfect for families with younger children or anyone looking for a relaxed experience. Spot monkeys, birds, and other wildlife from the boat with minimal walking required.
Option 2: Bogarin Sloth Trail
A gentle, easy trail focused on spotting sloths and other small rainforest animals. This is a great option for toddlers and younger kids or families who want a shorter, low-effort activity.
Option 3: Light Adventure for Older Kids
Families with older kids or teens may enjoy one last adventure, such as a short canopy zipline, horseback riding, or an ATV tour before leaving the region.
Evening:
Final Dinner & Farewell to La Fortuna
Spend your final evening enjoying a relaxed dinner in town or at your hotel. Many families like to choose a restaurant with volcano views or revisit a favorite spot from earlier in the trip.

Rental Car (Highly Recommended)
For families, we highly recommend renting a car. Having your own vehicle gives you the flexibility to explore at your own pace—perfect for nap schedules, snack stops, and spontaneous detours. Many of La Fortuna’s best experiences, like waterfalls, hiking trails, hanging bridges, and hot springs, are a short drive from town and much easier to access with a car. Driving in the area is generally straightforward, and most hotels offer free private parking, which makes things even simpler.
Shuttles & Organized Tours
If you’d rather not drive, shuttles and guided tours are a great alternative. Many adventure activities and wildlife tours include round-trip transportation from your hotel, which takes the stress out of logistics—especially helpful when traveling with younger kids. This option works well if you plan to book most of your activities through tour operators.
Taxis & Ride Shares
Taxis are readily available in La Fortuna and are useful for short trips around town or getting to hotels that aren’t within walking distance. This can be a convenient option for evenings out or quick transfers, though costs can add up if you rely on them frequently.
A Few Helpful Tips
Road conditions in Costa Rica can vary. While main roads are paved, some attractions are accessed via gravel roads, and rain is common—especially in the afternoon. If you plan to explore beyond the town center, a rental car with 4WD is a smart choice and provides extra peace of mind for families.
