Weather-Appropriate Clothing

Basics

  1. Base Layers

Layering is key to staying comfortable in Iceland. Start with quality base layers that regulate temperature and wick moisture away from your body.

  • Midweight or Lightweight Thermal Tops and Bottoms

These can be found in synthetic fabrics or merino wool and should weigh less than 0.5 pounds each. They keep you warm without adding bulk, making them ideal for chilly weather.

  • Long-Sleeve Shirts

Invest in a few long-sleeved shirts that can work double-duty. You'll be able to wear them over your thermal layer on colder days and can wear them solo when the weather is a bit warmer.

  1. Insulating Layers

Insulating layers are essential, especially in winter.

  • Fleece Jacket or Sweater

A decent fleece weighs around 1 pound and can provide warmth without being cumbersome. It can be layered under a shell jacket when temperatures drop but still worn solo when temperatures warm up a bit.

  • Down or Synthetic Insulating Jacket

Consider a jacket with a weight of about 1.5 pounds to keep you warm on colder days. Look for jackets that pack down small so you can save space in your luggage.

  1. Outer Layers

Protection from the elements is vital in Iceland's unpredictable weather. Rain and wind can be frequent and unexpected.

  • Waterproof and Windproof Jacket

A breathable jacket with a hood is non-negotiable. Spending an extra $100 on a quality jacket can save you from a miserable, wet experience while hiking in rainy conditions.

Keep in mind that when visiting waterfalls such as Seljalandsfoss, you WILL get wet. Using a completely waterproof outer layer can make a huge difference in your comfort, no matter the temperature outside that day. You don't want to be soaking wet the entire day, especially when temperatures drop.

In addition, there are frequent high wind advisories in Iceland, especially in the cooler months, which makes it essential to have a windproof outer layer.

  • Waterproof Pants

Don't forget about your bottoms. You should also have waterproof pants that are lightweight and breathable, which will be essential for hiking in wet or windy conditions.

    Additional Clothing Items

When packing for your Iceland adventure, don't overlook these key pieces:

  • Comfortable Hiking Pants or Leggings

Look for pants that are of good quality, which could cost around $50 or more. Make sure they are designed for active use and a bonus is if they are made of rip-stop material.

They should allow for freedom of movement on all types of terrain and most importantly be comfortable to endure long hikes.

  • Warm Accessories

Pack a hat, scarf, and gloves. These items can be game changers when you're exploring outdoors, especially during brisk weather.

We recommend bringing wool gloves as well as waterproof gloves, so you'll always be prepared for the weather.

Keep in mind that nights in the summer can still get quite cool, so it's a good idea to be prepared year-round for any temperature changes.

Footwear

Your choice of footwear can significantly affect your adventure.

  • Waterproof Hiking Boots

Invest in sturdy, supportive boots of good quality. They will be essential to keep your feet dry while handling rugged terrains. Be sure they have good ankle support, good grip on the soles, and are comfortable for walking long distances.

  • Casual Shoes or Sneakers

You may also want to consider packing a pair of comfortable casual shoes or sneakers for urban strolls around Reykjavik or other towns. Comfortable shoes can reduce fatigue during city explorations.

If you're looking to pack as light as possible, we recommend only taking hiking boots. You will need these more if you plan to travel outside of Reykjavik.

  • Swimwear

Of course, don’t forget your swimsuit for the iconic Blue Lagoon or the many natural hot springs located throughout the country. Although the Blue Lagoon provides you with a towel, you may consider bringing one for any trips to natural hot springs or lagoons such as Secret Lagoon or Reykjadalur.

Travel Essentials

Travel Documents and Copies

Proper travel documentation is crucial for your peace of mind!

  • Passport

Ensure it is valid for at least six months beyond your return date. A quick check can save you from unexpected travel issues.

  • Travel Insurance Information

This is essential for security during your trip. Invest in a good policy that covers emergencies and cancellations. You may also consider a policy that covers extreme sports or activities if you plan on partaking in anything like glacier hiking, lava caving, or snorkeling.

  • Backup Copies

Make photocopies of your passport, insurance, and itinerary. Save digital copies in your email or cloud storage for easy access. You should always have copies of every important document stored separately from the originals, in case of loss, theft, or damage.

Electronics

Stay connected and capture stunning moments!

  • Phone with International Roaming

Check with your carrier about international plans. Avoid unexpected charges by understanding your usage. Typical costs for international data and roaming are around $10 per day, per line.

Instead of using your phone plan, consider a SIM card or eSIM for data usage. Our favorite companies are Holafly and Airalo.

  • Camera

Whether it’s a DSLR or smartphone, your device should be able to capture Iceland’s natural beauty. You may also consider snapping some photos or videos with a drone. However, note that the weather may not be in your favor as high winds are common throughout the year.

  • Portable Charger/Power Bank

These are crucial for keeping your devices charged during long outings. When out in nature all day, or on a long like, it's crucial to keep your phone charged in case of emergency. Take a portable charger or two and the appropriate cables so you can always stay connected to GPS and emergency services.

  • Travel Adapter

Iceland uses type C and F plugs. A good adapter is essential, especially if you have multiple devices. Consider bringing along an adaptor extension cord if you have multiple devices.

Personal Items

Don't forget the essentials that will enhance your trip!

  • Toiletries

Pack travel-sized bottles for shampoo, conditioner, soap, and makeup. Many hotels provide basic toiletries, but having a small supply of your own is always a good idea in case your accommodation doesn't have what you need.

  • Moisturizer and Lip Balm

Given Iceland's dry air, a good moisturizer and lip balm can prevent chapped skin.

  • Sunglasses

Protect your eyes from the sun's glare, especially when it reflects off glaciers.

Outdoor Gear

Iceland is an outdoor paradise, so gear up for adventure!

Daypack

A reliable daypack is a must for carrying essentials during hikes.

  • Lightweight Backpack

Aim for a pack with a volume of 20-30 liters to fit water, snacks, and an extra layer comfortably. You'll also want to be sure you can fit a portable charger, small first aid kit, and flashlight, in case of emergencies.

When traveling with kids, it's essential that your daypack can fit diapers, wipes, a change of clothing, and any other kids-based essentials.

Hiking Gear

For those adventurous souls planning to explore Iceland's wild side, consider some additional gear:

  • Trekking Poles

These can offer much-needed stability on tricky, uneven trails.

  • Water Bottle

Staying hydrated is vital. A refillable water bottle is eco-friendly and cost-efficient.

We do recommend a refillable water bottle no matter what you plan to do on your trip. It's an eco-friendly and budget-friendly way to stay hydrated.

  • Hiking Pack

If you plan on doing longer treks while in Iceland, consider also bringing along a heftier hiking pack that can carry all essential gear, from extra clothing, food, a sleeping bag, and anything else you may need for your journey.

  • Baby Carrier

    * When traveling with children to Iceland, we recommend bringing a soft carrier for each child under 5. Unless you're planning on undertaking long treks, in which case, you should bring the structured carrier. However, for most hikes, including waterfall and canyon exploring, we recommend a soft carrier that can easily be packed in your luggage. Little legs get tired easily and this ensures your adventures don't stop 5 minutes in.

Seasonal Considerations

Winter Packing Tips (December - February)

Winter in Iceland is magical but requires careful preparation.

  • Heavy Insulated Jacket

Choose a jacket that retains warmth even in frigid temperatures. A quality jacket can cost upward of $200 but is worth it to protect you from potential hypothermia.

  • Thermal Underwear

Look for full-length tops and bottoms. Investing in a solid, good quality, and warm thermal layer can make all the difference in keeping you toasty while hunting the Northern Lights.

  • Ice Traction Cleats

These can easily fit over your boots and dramatically decrease slipping in icy conditions. If you are looking to walk extensively in ice or snow, these are a must. However, a good pair of winter boots with good tread will usually do the trick just fine.

If you plan on doing any glacier trekking tours, the guides will give you these as part of the tour package. They are called "crampons."

Summer Packing Tips (June - August)

Summer offers milder weather ideal for exploration!

  • Lightweight Waterproof Jacket

For warmer days, a lightweight jacket is essential. They aren't too costly, making them a practical addition to fend off summer showers.

  • Sun Hat and Sunscreen

Protect yourself from UV rays, even in cooler weather. A good sunscreen with SPF 30 can help prevent sunburn and a hat will do great to keep the sun off your scalp and face. Remember that you can get sunburnt even when it's cloudy!

Final Packing Tips

Packing Strategy

Optimize your space with smart packing techniques.

  • Use Packing Cubes: These help keep your clothing organized and easy to find, making your suitcase neat.

  • Roll Your Clothes: This technique minimizes wrinkles and maximizes space in your luggage.

Other Items to Consider

  • Snacks: Bring energy bars or trail mixes for remote excursions.

  • Guidebook or Journal: Use a journal to document your adventures and jot down tips for recommendations or experiences.
